Time Travel lets you scrub back through the entire edit history of a timeline in Sequence and view any earlier state — not just the last change. Unlike undo and redo, which step through changes one at a time, Time Travel gives you a slider across the whole history, so you can jump straight to how a timeline looked hours or days ago, then either restore that state or branch a new timeline from it.
Time Travel works on the timeline you have selected. It affects only that timeline's history, so select the timeline you want to review before you start.
Enter Time Travel#
- In Sequence, open the project and select the timeline you want to review.
- Open the Sequence menu (the logo at the top of the window) and choose Project History > Time Travel (or press Cmd-Shift-H — Windows: Ctrl-Shift-H).
The Time Travel bar appears above the timeline, with a history slider running from the start of the timeline's history on the left to the present on the right. As you move back in time, the timeline below updates to show that past state.

Note
The slider shows which parts of the history are loaded. Segments that are still loading appear fainter and fill in as Sequence fetches them — if you scrub into one, give it a moment to catch up.
Move through the history#
Once you're in Time Travel, move to the moment you want to inspect.
- Scrub: Drag the slider left to move further into the past, or right to return toward the present.
- Step: Press Cmd-Shift-Page Down (Windows: Ctrl-Shift-Page Down) to step forward, or Cmd-Shift-Page Up (Windows: Ctrl-Shift-Page Up) to step back. Hold the keys down to move faster the longer you hold.
The timeline updates as you move, so you can watch clips appear, move, and trim back to where they were at any point.
Restore or branch from a past state#
When you find a state you want to keep, you have two choices: replace the current timeline with it, or copy it into a new timeline and leave the current one untouched.
Duplicate the past state into a new timeline#
This is the non-destructive option — it leaves your current timeline exactly as it is.
- Scrub to the state you want to keep.
- Click Duplicate Timeline in the Time Travel bar.
Sequence creates a new timeline named "Copy of" the original, containing the edit as it was at that point, exits Time Travel, and switches you to the new timeline. Your original timeline is unchanged.
Revert the timeline to a past state#
Reverting replaces the current timeline's contents with the state you've scrubbed to.
- Scrub to the state you want to return to.
- Click Revert Timeline in the Time Travel bar.
- In the confirmation dialog, click Revert.
Sequence replaces the timeline's contents with the past version and exits Time Travel.
Caution
Revert replaces everything currently in the selected timeline. The revert is itself recorded in history, so you can re-enter Time Travel and move forward to recover the newer state — but if you want to keep both versions to compare, use Duplicate Timeline instead. You must have a timeline selected to revert; if nothing is selected, Sequence asks you to select one first.
Exit Time Travel#
Click the back arrow (Exit Time Travel) at the left of the bar, or press Cmd-Shift-H (Windows: Ctrl-Shift-H) again. The timeline returns to its present state, and the Time Travel bar closes.
Note
History is part of the shared project, so what you scrub to in Time Travel reflects the edits everyone has made. See Edit together in real time.
