Rename, download, and delete media

Every media item in the library carries a right-click menu of actions for managing that item: rename it, download its original file, delete it, create a screening, or open it in Shuttle. This page covers each action and how the menu differs for media clips versus documents.

Open the item menu#

The item menu is where all of these actions live.

  1. In the library, select the clip or file you want to act on.
  2. Right-click the item to open its menu. You can also press Cmd-. (Windows: Ctrl-.) to open the menu for the current selection.

The menu opens next to the item, grouped into timeline actions, item actions, and a delete action.

Rename a media item#

Renaming a clip changes its name in the library for everyone in the project.

  1. In the library, right-click the clip and choose Rename. You can also select the clip and press F2.
  2. Type the new name into the inline editor.
  3. Press Return (Windows: Enter) to confirm, or Escape to cancel.

The clip's label updates in place. If your new name changes the file extension, Sequence shows a confirmation dialog naming the new extension first — confirm it to apply the change, or cancel to keep the original name.

Renaming documents

Documents have no Rename entry in their menu. To rename a document, select it and press F2, then edit the name inline the same way.

Download the original file#

Download fetches the original media file — the one you uploaded — to your computer.

  1. In the library, right-click a single clip and choose Download.
  2. Wait for the download to start.

Sequence requests a download link from the server and your browser saves the original file. Download acts on one clip at a time, so select a single item before you open the menu. Documents can't be downloaded from the menu.

Create a screening#

A screening is a shareable review link built from a single clip.

  1. In the library, right-click a clip and choose Create screening.
2. In the dialog that opens, set the screening name, privacy, expiration, and sharing options.
  3. Confirm to create the screening.

Sequence opens the Create screening dialog for that clip. This action is available for one clip at a time and needs an active workspace, so it's disabled when nothing or more than one item is selected.

Delete a media item#

Deleting removes the item from the project library.

  1. In the library, select one or more items. To delete several at once, select them all before opening the menu.
  2. Right-click the selection and choose Delete. You can also press Shift-Delete.
  3. In the confirmation dialog, confirm the deletion.

The dialog names the item — or the number of items — you're about to remove. After you confirm, Sequence removes the media and returns your selection to the timeline. Deletion is permanent, so the confirmation step is always shown.

Open a media item in Shuttle#

Shuttle is Sequence's companion desktop app. Opening an item in Shuttle hands it off to that app.

  1. In the library, right-click a single item and choose Open in Shuttle.
  2. Allow your browser to open the Shuttle app when prompted.

Sequence opens the item through a seqshuttle:// link, so Shuttle needs to be installed on your computer. This action works for one item at a time, and it's available for both clips and documents.

Asset menu vs. document menu#

The two library item types offer different menus:

  • Media clips show Open in Shuttle, Rename, Download, and Create screening, plus Delete. In projects with a timeline, the clip menu also carries Insert, Drop, and Append to Timeline at the top.
  • Documents show only Open in Shuttle and Delete. Rename a document inline with F2 instead.
